Roxane Farmanfarmian, a professor of Middle East politics at the University of Cambridge, says sentiment inside Iran is gradually shifting away from the belief that restraint will help negotiations. She points to opinion articles in Iranian newspapers and media as evidence of a broader hardening. Iran, she says, appears determined to strike hard, demonstrate endurance and weaken America’s ability to sustain its efforts for too long. Kuwait is being used as an “example” of Iran’s retaliatory capacity.

The US military says two American service members were killed and another remains missing after Iranian strikes in Jordan. The deaths mark the first fatalities among US troops in the Iran war since March. The strikes in Jordan have therefore caused the first reported American military deaths in the conflict since that time. The military disclosed both the fatalities and the missing service member.
