WorldFrance wildfires force more than 220,000 people to evacuate

Wildfires spreading across southwestern France have forced more than 220,000 people to leave their homes. The evacuation is among the largest carried out in the country during peacetime. Bordeaux’s mayor said the advancing flames were “at the gates of the metropolitan area”, roughly 15 kilometres from the city. France’s interior minister said conditions remained highly unfavourable, with heat, dryness and strong winds making firefighting harder. William Denselow is reporting from the affected area.
