Scientists say touching, embracing and kissing before stressful moments may be an ancient way for great apes to build trust. Researchers at Durham University studied chimpanzees and bonobos that used physical contact to reassure one another before disputes over food. Chimpanzees, despite their reputation for aggression, were seen engaging in close contact. In one especially surprising behaviour, they placed fingers in each other’s mouths.
