Dense smoke rose over a vast pine forest outside Bordeaux as firefighters hurried to extinguish new flames before they widened the fire. Florian Lointier of the Paris Fire Brigade described the operation as intense and titanic. A military unit from Paris was sent to southwest France to support crews already worn down by the effort. More than 5,000 firefighters, military personnel, police officers and volunteers are battling the ferocious wildfire, which has triggered one of the largest evacuations.
