At 3:42 a.m. on July 28, 1976, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Tangshan in China’s Hebei province, killing 242,000 people. Fifty years later, the urban earthquake within a tectonic plate has left effects described as “aftershocks” lasting for nearly half a century.
