SocietyNative livestock helps reduce wildfire risk in Spain’s Galicia
Native goats, sheep and cattle are being used in Galicia, Spain, to reduce wildfire risk by grazing on flammable undergrowth. The approach has gathered pace after the region endured Spain’s worst wildfire year in 2025. Nearly 119,000 hectares burned that year, an area roughly twice the size of Madrid. One of the animals involved is the Cachena, a native goat-like cow able to forage widely and move across Galicia’s mountainous terrain.
