WorldRecord-low European water levels reveal mammoth bones and forgotten shipwrecks

Water levels in several of Europe’s major waterways have fallen to exceptionally low levels, with some locations setting new records. Extreme heat, intensified by the climate crisis, is worsening drought across the continent. Record-breaking heatwaves are causing the hot atmosphere to rapidly draw moisture from rivers, lakes, soils and plants. The Danube has reached its lowest level in 30 years in parts of Hungary, Serbia and Romania, while the Rhine has also fallen, exposing mammoth skeletons and long-forgotten shipwrecks.
