Large clay vessels, once a familiar way to store and cool drinking water in Iraq, are becoming popular again as people reconsider plastic alternatives. In Duz Khurmatu, brothers Niaz and Nawazad Hayas are preserving a pottery tradition passed down through their family. They make markana water jugs, cups and other household vessels. Niaz says drinking from clay is healthier than using plastic bottles, while a longtime user values the naturally cool, refreshing taste of water kept in a markana.
