ScienceDolphin deaths in South Australia spike after algal bloom destroys food sources

Scientists say the marine disaster in March 2025 may be connected to a sharp rise in dolphin deaths across South Australia. Long-term records show that mortalities during the state’s devastating algal bloom were the highest in 12 years. At least 70 common and bottlenose dolphin carcasses were found across the state last year. Another 20 were reported in 2026, including the recent death of Zoom, a popular Port River dolphin.
