WorldIsrael reportedly courted Iran’s former hardline president for post-regime role
Israel reportedly sought to recruit Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran’s former president, to lead a new regime in Tehran after the Islamic system was removed. Media reports say Mossad agents went as far as sending the agency’s top spy to Budapest to meet him. The effort allegedly began in 2022, after Ahmadinejad had distanced himself from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Reports say the approach continued even while Israel was conducting a fierce campaign in Gaza against Hamas, a major Iranian ally.
