SocietySix in 10 University of Tokyo admits are from Kanto: Why regional students give up despite equal ability and effort

Around six in ten students admitted to the University of Tokyo come from the Kanto region. Many high school students in regional areas convince themselves that the university belongs to a completely different world. The article argues that this belief is not caused by differences in talent or effort. Instead, it grows from having no familiar people to use as points of comparison. Regional students may therefore abandon the goal because of a mistaken perception rather than an academic gap.
