WorldPolish-Ukrainian solidarity over Russian threat undermined by bitter historical dispute

Kyiv’s decision to honor Second World War fighters accused of killing about 100,000 Poles has brought long-running Polish-Ukrainian tensions back to the surface. After Russia attacked Ukraine in February 2022, millions of Poles helped Ukrainian refugees arriving across the border with food, shelter and support. Four years later, that solidarity has faded into a bitter dispute over history, marked by angry rhetoric and mutual accusations. Poland has also threatened to block Ukraine’s EU accession until it puts its historical record in order.
