TechNew York becomes first US state to enact a data center moratorium

New York has become the first US state to impose a statewide moratorium on data centers. Governor Kathy Hochul signed an order blocking new environmental permits for hyperscale facilities for up to one year. That means new hyperscale data centers cannot establish operations in the state during the pause. A separate bill passed by the legislature could place even tighter limits on future development, but it still requires Hochul’s signature. The move makes New York the first state to enact such a measure.
