SocietyGilgit-Baltistan: Pakistan’s tourist jewel tested by development and climate change

The Hunza Valley in Pakistan’s remote northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan has changed dramatically over only a few decades. Greater access to education, better healthcare and vigorous local development have reshaped the area. This progress is often associated with foundations linked to the Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili community. The minority has nearly 500,000 members in Pakistan and represents about 90% of Hunza’s population.
