An Australian law that took effect in December prevents children under 16 from holding accounts on platforms including Snapchat, Instagram and YouTube. Studies indicate that most children have nevertheless managed to access the networks and open accounts. The government has doubled the maximum fine for technology companies that fail to comply. It is also warning that further court action could follow.
