Venezuela’s interim government says it will enter formal talks with the opposition to “strengthen democracy” in the country. The United States supports the move and says it is pursuing a “democratic transition.” Nobel laureate María Corina Machado will not lead negotiations on new elections, contrary to expectations. Venezuela is still recovering from two earthquakes that killed more than 4,700 people.
