As Ukraine’s full-scale war enters its fifth year, it is difficult to picture the earlier era when world leaders traveled to Russia for high-level talks with Vladimir Putin. In 2006, Russia still belonged to the Group of Eight, and leaders from the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Britain, Canada and Japan gathered in St. Petersburg for a three-day summit. The European Commission president also attended. Leaders from seven other countries joined as observers.
