A parasite that causes diarrhea has infected people in at least 34 US states in recent weeks. Since May 1, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 1,644 cases through laboratory testing. The agency is also aware of more than 5,100 additional cases awaiting analysis. That count is substantially above the 249 cases reported across the country by the same point last year.
