The article examines how apologies and crisis responses can draw severe criticism because of their appearance and format, rather than their wording alone. Taro Yamamoto’s poem-like resignation document and Onigoe Tomahawk’s casual apology video are presented as typical examples in which sincerity failed to come across. It considers why the “cost of appearance” can determine how such acts are judged. The focus is on presentation as a factor in public evaluation.
