The Venice International Film Festival, one of the world’s three major film festivals, will open in Italy in September. Two films from Japan, directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda and Shin’ya Tsukamoto, have been selected for the competition section. They will compete for the festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion. The selection places both Japanese directors in the festival’s main awards race.
