People may assume that learning more necessarily strengthens thinking, but the history of scholarship can instead be seen as an effort to make thinking unnecessary. Using the shift from the geocentric to the heliocentric model and the medieval philosophical idea of Occam’s razor, the article examines the nature of knowledge and why learning moves toward “not thinking.”
