Global ocean surface temperatures reached a July record of 20.96C, according to the EU climate monitoring service, as developing El Niño conditions added to human-driven warming. Western Europe also endured record heat and prolonged dryness, fuelling severe wildfires and pushing rivers and water supplies under pressure.
