A Chinese court sentenced Long Xiang, former chairman of the Standing Committee of the Nanjing Municipal People’s Congress, to death with a two-year reprieve for accepting 261 million yuan, or about $39 million, in bribes. He was also convicted of embezzlement and insider trading. His cooperation, guilty plea and remorse led to a mitigated sentence that will become life imprisonment if no other crimes are found.
