Johan Sjöström, a senior research scientist at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, says the fires should not be viewed as an isolated event. He argues that Europe needs to move beyond a reactive system focused on emergency response. In its place, he proposes prevention through strategic landscape design, ecological planning and long-term adaptation. Such measures are intended to address conditions that may increasingly become “the new normal.”
