The EU says reciprocal border restrictions imposed by Spain and Italy are temporary and will not have a lasting effect on the Schengen area. Spain began checking travellers from Italy after Rome introduced similar controls following a surge of migrants into Ceuta, while Madrid accused Italy of allowing “persistent irregular migration”.
